Join Chris Morin to apply the principles of ACCA Manual D, Residential Duct Design, to ducted mini-splits and whole home heat pumps. This session will start with a review of the universal rules of duct design. With a focus on low load applications with mid-static indoor units, Chris will go on to discuss:
• Determining available blower static
• Calculating total equivalent duct length and the impact of duct sizing
• Accurately calculating friction loss
• Example with low-, mid- and high static air handlers
• Duct diagnostics: air velocity, static pressure, air flow…
Chris Morin is the founder and author of the popular HVAC Pro Blog. You can find Chris’ articles on HVACProBlog.com, Patreon, or Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Youtube. Chris also serves as Regional Sales Manager for Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US.
Learning objectives
• Find relevant information for duct sizing in equipment specifications
• Apply equipment specifications to calculation of available static pressure
• Distinguish system attributes that contribute to friction losses
• Evaluate duct performance through performance testing
